Paul Chow and the FREE CHINA

On Thursday, November 19th, the Fighting Sail documentary crew filmed Paul and Vera Chow at Pier 41 in San Francisco.

David Perga, directed and filmed, while Sue Wang handled the Associate Directore chores.

In 1955, when Paul and the FREE CHINA arrived in San Francisco after their long voyage across the Pacific from Taiwan, their first landfall was Pier 41.

Sue learned there is an informational marker on the Embarcadero at Lombard with Paul's picture on it.

I'm now thinking we should name the documentary Dragon Child, the true story of Chinese mariners crossing the Pacific Ocean.

The documentary proves Chinese mariners could have gotten to North America about the same time as the Vikings - 1000 AD - if not before.

The motivation was the same: fishing, exploration, trade, and emigration.
The wind and currents were the same: the FREE CHINA was pushed across the Pacific by the prevailing winds and currents.
And now, this documentary proves Chinese maritime technology was certainly advanced enough to sail a flat-bottomed Chinese ship across the Pacific.

I think we've got an important piece of economic history.

Here's a link to the trailer about the cruise.

This footage will complement the interview with Paul recently concluded.

Here's a picture of Sue, David, and Paul.

Here's one of Paul in front of the Sea Lions at Pier 39.

On our way to the Pier, Sue got attacked by this creature.
